How to Design and Plan Container Gardens?

Through the use of container gardens, you can create a garden even without a big yard. Container gardens utilize various pots to allow you to design gardens with the limited space you have and keep it manageable and contained. Since you are creating a garden in a very small space, you need cautious planning of your container, as well as soil and water needs for your container gardens. So how do you plan container gardens that will work? Here are some of the things to should consider when creating your garden.

1. The first thing to consider is The Container. You should follow a set of selection guidelines when you are purchasing your pots for your container garden. You need to get pots with bigger holes, at least half an inch in width, at the bottom so that there will be sufficient drainage, or there will be possibility of having waterlogged roots. Because of the large holes, it can be easy to lose soil through these holes, you should line them with newspaper to allow drainage while preventing the soil from leaving. You need to determine what kind of pots you want to use in your container gardens because different materials for pots hold different disadvantages. For example, if you choose plastic pots, even though they are cheap, but they tend to deteriorate when exposed to sunlight for a long period. Terracotta pots very tough and well made, but they will cause the soil to dry out quickly. On the other hand, glazed ceramics pots have the reverse effect and may need additional holes to be drilled in them to achieve proper drainage.

2. The second thing to consider is watering. Water management is one of the important factor you need to consider in container gardens. This is because of the small limited space of the container compared to a garden in the yard, the soil will definitely evaporate faster then in the yard. Therefore, you may need to water the plant daily, depending on how hot and dry the weather is. You need a soil that drains excess water quickly, but still retains enough so that it will not as dry as a desert. In order to achieve this, you need to have the best compost or potting mixtures, which you can buy at your local gardening store.

3. The third thing is the amount of sunlight your plants get when you plan your container gardens. Most plants must have at least five hours of sunlight daily such as tomatoes but there are some vegetables like lettuces that want a cool weather. So when creating container gardens, you have to carefully select the correct plants that can grow well in the amount of sunlight you have in different area of your home

I am sure with all these considerations, you can succeed in creating your dream container garden.
