These Japanese gardens are places where people go to for reflection, meditation,, praying or finding peace in the midst of their hectic and stressful life. These gardens are normally found in Japan and they can be large or small. Now the popularity has spread to the western world. What Is A Zen Garden? The simplest definition of a zen garden will be called a Japanese Rock Garden. All Zen gardens are originated from Karesansui gardens and these include sand, gravel and rocks. Some gardens have grasses or other plant life, but this is not a requirement for a Zen Garden. The rocks in a Zen Gardens usually represent mountains and the sand represents water. It is often design in some special patterns to give it a rippling effect. Most of these gardens have some seating benches which can allow visitors to enjoy the peace of these gardens. The History Of The Zen Garden Loraine Kuck, an American writer is the person who has name the Karesansui Garden as Zen Garden. She used this term in 1935to describe the Karesansui Garden in one of her books. Now the name has been used for almost any Japanese themed garden that contains rocks. There are even small desk sized Zen gardens created to calm workers during stressful times. The Zen gardens in Japan starts back thousands of years where the japanese created such places for meditation in their temples. These gardens have a specific number of rock arranged in similar patterns that are conducive to meditation. Visitors to these gardens were advised to find the subliminal arrangements of the rocks by using their inner mind and myth mentioned that when you reach a complete state of meditation, you can see rocks that only exist in your mind's eye. How can you plant your own Zen Garden? You can fully enjoy the peace of your zen garden by identifying an area in your own yard to build one. You can also add sand and rocks to your existing setup to create such gardens. You need to keep one thing in mind when creating the garden is that you want to create an area where you can relax and feel peaceful enough to quietly reflect on life and find the inner strength. You can even create your garden by placing sand in large planters, setting the rocks strategically on the sad and planting a few plants within the planter.
